Post Share - One World, One Heart

Becky over at Purple Sparkle Crafts has posted the link to this great idea. She's also doing a gorgeous little giveaway in relation to it.

One World, One Heart is the brainchild of Lisa at A Whimsical Bohemian. To quote from her blog;

"The original idea behind this giveaway event was to bring bloggers together from around the world who may never ordinarily meet. It closes the gap of the blog community and enables us to interact, discover new and wonderful people, and in the process possibly win a prize or many prizes along the way.......This is more than wanting to win something.......that is only the means.......in the end it's about finding kindred spirits."

Click on the One World icon (above) to go to the Whimsical Bohemian blog and read the post on how to participate, if you so wish, and please pop over to Purple Sparkle Crafts for a chance to win the pretty prize Becky is offering in conjunction with the One World, One Heart event. No, I'm not telling you what the prize is, you have to go look for yourself.

Groundhog Day

We're at the halfway point of the Winter; or so popular folklore tells us. Groundhog Day, which apparently evolved from the old observance of Candlemas, is today. Tradition says that whatever weather you have on February 2nd, the opposite will be true of the remainder of the Winter.

So if it's fair and fine where you are today, the groundhog isn't going to be prognosticating any good news. And then again, maybe its just a rodent and you have to accept the fact that Winter ain't over yet.

So Happy Groundhog Day! Accept no substitutes! See the original Punxsatawney Phil! http://www.groundhog.org/

Birthday Oddity

Apparently bubble wrap is 50 years old today. And, it was originally designed to be used as wallpaper. Well, sort of...........

"A New York City designer approached inventors Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding in the late 1950s with a proposal for creating textured wallpaper.

That idea stalled, but the product the two men had created in a small lab in New Jersey found its niche when, according to company lore, Fielding was flying into Newark Airport and noticed the fluffy clouds that seemed to cushion the plane's descent."

The rest, as they say, is history.

January Wrap-up

And I don't just mean the weather. Baby, it's cold outside! It's been a funny old month here in central England. Unseasonably cold and unusually snowy too until late last week. Caused no end of problems for many people, due mostly to the fact that the municipalities simply refuse to deal with it effectively, or make a half-assed go of it, then leave the rest to nature and whatever the traffic can do. We've reverted to the norm of perpetual overcast skies and periodic rain that's more typical of the British Winter. Christmas is still fresh in my mind, so it's odd to think February is just around the corner. Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year. Both of which incidentally, fall on the same date this year.

I'm waiting for my Art of Crochet guide to arrive. It's one of the those how-to-materials-included thingys that comes in installments; you can buy it weekly from any good newsagent or bookseller. Or like me, you can sign up online and have it delivered by mail. I've always found knitting too complicated for my craft-challenged brain. Crochet I was told, is simpler and results come quite quickly once you get the hang of it. Fingers crossed! I'm going to make a very serious effort at it as a) I don't make a habit of wasting my tiny budget on whims and fancies and b) I simply can't find the soft decorating items I want in the stores. I figured if others can make their own, surely I can manage an afghan or two. Watch this space.

To add to my already loaded bookshelf, this week I got a copy of Beauty Bible Beauty Steals. If you're in the U.K., I can highly recommend this little volume for looking (and feeling) good on a bijou budget. With the exception of some of the anti-ageing stuff, none of the products recommended are over £10. And even those are usually £20 or less. Not bad in a market that's increasingly expensive. Everything is tried and tested by ordinary Janes who presumably, like most of us, haven't the money or patience any more for a cabinet full of useless product.

The job continues good. There was a full time opening for a skincare consultant in the store, but unfortunately I didn't get it. However, I did get another extension to my temp contract so that takes me to the end of February. If the budget is kind, come March, I'll be offered a permanent post. Another fingers crossed and watch this space. The thought of having to try to find another job in this part of the country, in this recession is too depressing to contemplate.

And finally, a new photo of the grand-baby in Canada. Miss Amelia will soon be three months old (born October 28th, premature but healthy thank goodness). Coming along like a house on fire too. Isn't she GOR-geous!

A CK Christmas

I kept meaning to post a photo of the gorgeous Cath Kidston goodies I got for Christmas this year. I've finally remembered and here they be!

Folk Flowers handbag, paisley purse (wallet), Stanley zip purse and a matching Stanley key fob.

Thank you Santa! I think this year I'll ask for a new digicam. My old one, as you can see from the photo, is in serious need of replacing.

Back In Black

After taking it offline for a while, I've given my seasonal blog, Holiday Hollow, a refurb and a new direction. I hope you like the new look and will pop by from time to time to enjoy all things dedicated to what I feel is truly "the most wonderful time of the year", Autumn.

Ali xx
